The Gospel is good news. The Bible says we have a sin problem and the wages of sin is death. Not just us as people, but our world as a whole. This world—and everything in it—is not how it was originally intended.
Even in our best moments, when all seems well in the world, when Mt. Rainier is filling the crisp, clear sky and when Lake Washington is as smooth as glass, it’s hard to imagine anything being better than that. But something is—or was—before sin entered the world. Before humans decided their wills were better than God’s will and decided to reject His wisdom and do things their own way. When that happened, the fullness of God’s creation, the true peace and pure relationship we had with God, with nature, and with one another was shattered. It broke. And in our rebellion, we broke it. We see signs of this all over humanity. Even with the best of intentions, look at how humanity has ravaged this world, how people have oppressed their neighbors, and how people war against themselves and each other. This is not how it was intended.
But God, in His great mercy and unending love, made a way to repair this brokenness. While we committed treason, God made a way to restore what we destroyed. God entered this world to rescue sinners from their sin. God came as Jesus Christ and chose to take on the sin debt each of us owe in order to restore our relationship with Him. We don’t have to pay our impossible sin debt because God already did for us. Jesus Christ makes all things new. He redeems, reconciles, renews and restores. He is good news for us sinners. He died for our sins so we don’t need to anymore. He wiped that sin debt clean by giving up His life on the cross and He defeated sin and death by rising from the dead three days later.
In Christ, your debt is paid. In Christ you are free from the chains that once imprisoned you. No longer do you need to fear death. No longer do you need to bear the burden of sin. In Christ there is eternal life. Jesus Christ is alive. Jesus Christ is The Gospel. Jesus Christ is good news. He paid your sin debt. He loves you. He delights in you. He forgives you. Surrender your life to Him and have your relationship with God restored.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved... Ephesians 2:4-5 ESV
